Prove that the scalar field

is conservative and find scalar potential.

Answer

A vector field F = Pi + Qj is conservative if the curl of F is zero, which in two dimensions simplifies to the condition βˆ‚Q/βˆ‚x = βˆ‚P/βˆ‚y. Given P = x^2 + xy^2 and Q = y^2 + x^2y:

βˆ‚P/βˆ‚y = 2xy
βˆ‚Q/βˆ‚x = 2xy

Since βˆ‚P/βˆ‚y = βˆ‚Q/βˆ‚x, the field is conservative. To find the scalar potential Ο† such that βˆ‡Ο† = F, we solve:

βˆ‚Ο†/βˆ‚x = x^2 + xy^2
βˆ‚Ο†/βˆ‚y = y^2 + x^2y

Integrating the first equation with respect to x:

Ο† = (x^3/3) + (x^2y^2/2) + g(y)

Differentiating this with respect to y and equating to Q:

x^2y + g'(y) = y^2 + x^2y
g'(y) = y^2

Integrating g'(y) gives g(y) = y^3/3 + C. Thus, the scalar potential is:

Ο†(x, y) = (x^3/3) + (x^2y^2/2) + (y^3/3) + C

Answer

Let f = x^2yz. The gradient of f is βˆ‡f = (βˆ‚f/βˆ‚x)i + (βˆ‚f/βˆ‚y)j + (βˆ‚f/βˆ‚z)k = (2xyz)i + (x^2z)j + (x^2y)k. At the point (1, 2, -1):

βˆ‡f(1, 2, -1) = (2(1)(2)(-1))i + ((1)^2(-1))j + ((1)^2(2))k = -4i - j + 2k

The direction vector is v = i + 2j + 3k. Its magnitude is |v| = sqrt(1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2) = sqrt(14). The unit vector in the direction of v is u = (i + 2j + 3k) / sqrt(14). The directional derivative is the dot product βˆ‡f Β· u:

(-4i - j + 2k) Β· (i + 2j + 3k) / sqrt(14) = (-4 - 2 + 6) / sqrt(14) = 0
