Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Explain briefly the basic steps to solve the problems using ANSYS.

2 marks

Answer

  1. Preprocessing: Define geometry, material properties, element types, and mesh generation.
  2. Solution: Apply boundary conditions and loads, then solve the system of algebraic equations.
  3. Postprocessing: View and analyze results such as displacements, stresses, and strains.
b

State the minimum potential energy principle and explain different terms of it.

3 marks

Answer

The principle of minimum potential energy states that for a conservative system, the configuration that satisfies equilibrium is the one that minimizes the total potential energy, Π.

Π = U + Ω

Where U is the internal strain energy stored in the body and Ω is the potential energy of external loads (body forces and surface tractions).

c
