Answer PaperPaper Code: 115EEMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Write a short note on cutting fluids.

2 marks

Answer

Cutting fluids are substances used in machining to reduce friction and heat at the tool-chip interface. They serve primarily to cool the cutting zone, lubricate the tool-workpiece contact area, flush away chips, and provide corrosion protection to the machined surface.

b

What are the requirements for the cutting tool material?

3 marks

Answer

An ideal cutting tool material must possess high hot hardness to retain its cutting edge at elevated temperatures, high wear resistance to ensure tool life, sufficient toughness to withstand impact and vibrations, and high thermal conductivity to dissipate heat efficiently.

c

How do you classify automatic machines?

a

During turning a mild steel component with an orthogonal tool a feed of 0.75mm/rev is used at 50 R.P.M. If the chip thickness is 1.5mm, determine the chip thickness ratio. Also find the length of chip removed in one minute, if the work diameter is 50mm before the cut is taken. Assume a continuous chip.
