a

What do you mean by notch sensitivity?

2 marks

Answer

Notch sensitivity is the degree to which the theoretical effect of a stress concentration (notch) is actually realized in a material. It is defined as the ratio of the actual stress concentration factor to the theoretical stress concentration factor, indicating how sensitive a material is to brittle fracture at stress raisers.

b

What is meant by stress concentration? How do you take it into consideration in case of a component subjected to dynamic loading?

3 marks

Answer

Stress concentration is the localized increase in stress at discontinuities like holes, grooves, or fillets. In dynamic loading, it is accounted for by using the fatigue stress concentration factor (Kf) to modify the endurance limit, typically expressed as:

σ_e = (K_f * σ_a) / S_e

where S_e is the modified endurance limit.
