Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Explain the benefits of CAD in an industry.

2 marks

Answer

The primary benefits of CAD in an industry include increased productivity through faster design iterations, improved product quality due to precise modeling and simulation, and reduced design costs by minimizing physical prototyping. Furthermore, CAD facilitates better documentation, easier modification of designs, and seamless integration with manufacturing processes (CAM) for enhanced data consistency.

1b

Differentiate job production, batch production and mass production.

3 marks

Answer

The differences between the three production systems are based on volume, variety, and process flexibility:

  • Job Production: Involves the manufacturing of a single or very small number of units designed to customer specifications. It requires highly skilled labor and general-purpose machines, resulting in high flexibility but low production volume and high unit costs.
  • Batch Production: Involves producing a limited quantity of identical products in groups or batches. It balances flexibility and efficiency, utilizing specialized tooling and semi-skilled labor to produce moderate volumes, allowing for periodic changes in production setup.
  • Mass Production: Involves the continuous production of large volumes of standardized products using dedicated, automated equipment and assembly lines. It offers the lowest unit cost and highest efficiency but provides minimal product variety and requires high initial capital investment.
