a

Discuss advantages, limitations and applications of FEM.

7 marks

Answer

The Finite Element Method (FEM) is a numerical technique for finding approximate solutions to boundary value problems. Its advantages include the ability to handle complex geometries, irregular boundaries, and non-homogeneous materials. It effectively models different loading conditions and boundary constraints, making it highly versatile for structural, thermal, and fluid analysis.

Limitations include high computational requirements for complex 3D models, sensitivity to mesh quality, and the potential for significant errors if input parameters or boundary conditions are incorrectly defined. It also requires specialized software and expertise to interpret results accurately.

Applications are widespread across engineering disciplines, including stress analysis of machine components, heat transfer analysis, fluid flow simulation, vibration and modal analysis, and crashworthiness testing in automotive and aerospace industries.

b

Explain plane stress and plane strain conditions with suitable examples.

8 marks

Answer

Plane Stress occurs in thin plates where the thickness is significantly smaller than the other dimensions, and the loads act only in the plane of the plate. In this condition, the stress components perpendicular to the plate surface are assumed to be zero (σz = τxz = τyz = 0). An example is a thin sheet metal component subjected to in-plane tensile or compressive forces.

Plane Strain occurs in long, prismatic structures where the cross-section remains constant along the length, and the loading is uniform along that length. In this condition, the strain components perpendicular to the cross-section are assumed to be zero (εz = γxz = γyz = 0). An example is a long dam or a thick-walled pipe under internal pressure, where the longitudinal deformation is constrained by the geometry.
