a

Describe the Mechatronics design process with a block diagram.

8 marks

Answer

The mechatronics design process is an iterative, multidisciplinary approach that integrates mechanical, electrical, and control systems. It begins with identifying the customer needs and system requirements, followed by the conceptual design phase where various system architectures are proposed. Mathematical modeling and simulation are then used to predict system behavior, leading to the detailed design of mechanical components, electronic circuits, and control algorithms. The final stages involve prototyping, system integration, and rigorous testing to ensure the design meets the initial specifications.

Requirements Analysis → Conceptual Design → Modeling & Simulation → Detailed Design → Prototyping → Integration & Testing → Final System
b

Explain any one application of Mechatronic system.

7 marks

Answer

An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is a classic example of a mechatronic system used in automotive vehicles to prevent wheel lock-up during emergency braking. The system consists of:

  • Sensors: Wheel speed sensors monitor the rotational speed of each wheel.
  • Controller (ECU): An electronic control unit processes the sensor data to detect impending wheel lock-up.
  • Actuators: Hydraulic valves modulate the brake pressure applied to the wheels.

By rapidly pulsing the brake pressure, the system maintains traction between the tire and the road, allowing the driver to maintain steering control while reducing the stopping distance.
