What are the basic elements of mechatronics system?

7 marks

Answer

A mechatronics system is an integration of mechanical engineering, electronics, computer engineering, and control engineering. Its basic elements include:

  • Sensors: Devices that detect changes in the physical environment and convert them into electrical signals (e.g., proximity sensors, encoders).
  • Actuators: Components that produce motion or force based on control signals (e.g., motors, solenoids, hydraulic cylinders).
  • Controller: The brain of the system, typically a microcontroller, PLC, or microprocessor, which processes input data and executes control algorithms.
  • Interface/Signal Conditioning: Circuits that bridge the gap between sensors/actuators and the controller, such as A/D converters, amplifiers, and filters.
  • Mechanical System: The physical structure or mechanism that performs the intended task, such as gears, linkages, or robotic arms.
b

Explain the Graphical representation of mechatronics system.

8 marks

Answer

The graphical representation of a mechatronics system is typically depicted as a closed-loop block diagram showing the flow of information and energy. The system is visualized through the following interconnected blocks:

  • Input/Reference: The desired setpoint or command signal provided to the system.
  • Controller Block: Receives the error signal (difference between reference and feedback) and calculates the necessary control action.
  • Actuator/Drive System: Receives power and control signals to physically manipulate the mechanical system.
  • Mechanical System/Process: The physical plant that undergoes change or motion.
  • Feedback Loop: Sensors monitor the output of the mechanical system and send the data back to the controller to ensure precision and stability.

Graphically, this is represented as a signal flow where the Controller feeds into the Actuator, which drives the Mechanical System. A feedback path connects the output of the mechanical system back to the input junction (summing point) via a Sensor, completing the closed-loop control architecture.
