The major axis and minor axis of the ellipse are 125 mm and 75 mm respectively. Construct an ellipse.

10 marks

Answer

To construct an ellipse with a major axis (AB) of 125 mm and a minor axis (CD) of 75 mm using the concentric circles method:

  1. Draw the major axis AB and minor axis CD intersecting at O.
  2. With O as center, draw two concentric circles with diameters 125 mm and 75 mm.
  3. Divide both circles into 12 equal parts by drawing radial lines from O, labeling points on the outer circle as 1, 2, 3... and corresponding points on the inner circle as 1', 2', 3'...
  4. From each point on the outer circle (e.g., 1), draw a line parallel to the minor axis.
  5. From the corresponding point on the inner circle (e.g., 1'), draw a line parallel to the major axis.
  6. The intersection of these two lines provides a point on the ellipse. Repeat this for all 12 divisions.
  7. Join all intersection points with a smooth, continuous curve using a French curve to complete the ellipse.
b

Draw vertical axis parabola in a rectangle 100 mm high and 80 mm wide.

15 marks

Answer

To draw a vertical axis parabola within a rectangle of 80 mm width and 100 mm height using the rectangle method:

  1. Draw a rectangle ABCD where AB = 80 mm (width) and AD = 100 mm (height).
  2. Mark the midpoint E of the top side AB. Draw a vertical line from E to the base CD, representing the axis of the parabola.
  3. Divide the width AE into 4 equal parts (1, 2, 3) and the height AD into 4 equal parts (1', 2', 3').
  4. Connect point E to the points 1', 2', 3' on the vertical side AD.
  5. Draw vertical lines from points 1, 2, 3 on the base to intersect the lines E1', E2', and E3' respectively. Label these intersection points as P1, P2, and P3.
  6. Repeat the same procedure for the other half of the rectangle (EB side) to obtain points P1', P2', and P3'.
  7. Connect the vertex E and all points P1, P2, P3, D, and P1', P2', P3', C with a smooth, freehand curve to form the parabola.

The distance between the end projectors of a straight line AB is 60 mm. Point A is 5 mm above H.P. and 30 mm in front of V.P. Point B is 40 mm above H.P. and 50 mm behind V.P. Draw the projections and find the inclination of straight line AB with H.P. and V.P. and the true length of the line. Find also the traces.

A cube, side 50 mm, is resting on H.P. on its base/face with all the vertical faces equally inclined to V.P. It is cut by A.I.P. in such a way that the true shape of section is a regular hexagon. Find the inclination of C.P. with H.P. and draw projections and the true shape of section. Also project auxiliary view on a plane parallel to cutting plane.
