Draw a hyperbola when the distance between its focus and directrix is 50mm and eccentricity is 3/2.

7 marks

Answer

To draw the hyperbola with eccentricity e = 3/2 and focus-directrix distance (VF) = 50 mm:

  1. Draw a vertical line as the directrix and a horizontal line as the axis.
  2. Mark the focus F on the axis at 50 mm from the directrix.
  3. Locate the vertex V on the axis by dividing the distance VF in the ratio 3:2 (e = 3/2). Since 3+2=5 parts, each part is 10 mm. V is 30 mm from the directrix and 20 mm from F.
  4. Mark points 1, 2, 3, etc., on the axis beyond the vertex.
  5. Draw vertical lines through these points.
  6. With F as center and radius equal to the distance from the point (e.g., 1) to the directrix multiplied by e, draw arcs to cut the vertical line through point 1.
  7. Repeat for other points to obtain a series of points on the curve. Join these points with a smooth freehand curve to form the hyperbola.
b

The length of a scale with a RF of 2:3 is 20 cm. Construct this scale and mark a distance of 16.5 cm on it.

8 marks

Answer

Given RF = 2/3 and length of scale = 20 cm. The maximum length represented by the scale is calculated as:

Maximum Length = Length of Scale / RF = 20 / (2/3) = 30 cm
  1. Draw a line of 20 cm length to represent the scale.
  2. Divide this line into 3 equal parts, where each part represents 10 cm.
  3. Subdivide the first part into 10 equal divisions, each representing 1 cm.
  4. To mark 16.5 cm, identify the 10 cm mark on the main scale and add 6.5 cm from the subdivided part.
  5. Measure and mark the distance clearly on the constructed scale.
