Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define Probability Mass function and Probability Density function.

2 marks

Answer

A Probability Mass Function (PMF), denoted as p(x), gives the probability that a discrete random variable is exactly equal to some value x. It satisfies p(x) ≥ 0 and the sum of all p(x) over the sample space equals 1. A Probability Density Function (PDF), denoted as f(x), is used for continuous random variables such that the probability that X falls in an interval [a, b] is the integral of f(x) from a to b. It satisfies f(x) ≥ 0 and the total integral over the entire range equals 1.

b

If X is a continuous random variable with probability function f(X=x) = k e-2x, x>0, then find k.

3 marks

Answer

For a continuous random variable, the total area under the PDF must be 1:

∫[0 to ∞] k e^(-2x) dx = 1

Integrating the function:

k [ -1/2 e^(-2x) ] from 0 to ∞ = 1
k [ 0 - (-1/2) ] = 1
k/2 = 1 ⇒ k = 2
c
