State and explain Kirchhoff’s laws.

6 marks

Answer

Kirchhoff’s Current Law (KCL) states that the algebraic sum of currents entering a node (or junction) is zero. Mathematically, ΣI = 0. This is based on the principle of conservation of charge, implying that the total current entering a junction must equal the total current leaving it.

Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law (KVL) states that the algebraic sum of all voltages around any closed loop in a circuit is zero. Mathematically, ΣV = 0. This is based on the principle of conservation of energy, meaning the sum of voltage drops across components in a loop equals the sum of the source voltages.

b

Obtain the total power supplied by the 60-V source and the power absorbed in each resistor in the network of Figure.

9 marks

Answer

To determine the power, first calculate the equivalent resistance of the network. Assuming a standard series-parallel configuration where the 60-V source is connected to resistors R1, R2, and R3, calculate the total resistance R_eq. The total current supplied by the source is found using I = V / R_eq.

The power supplied by the source is calculated using the formula:

P_source = V × I

The power absorbed by each individual resistor is calculated using the formula:

P_resistor = I_r^2 × R

where I_r is the current flowing through the specific resistor. By applying Ohm’s law and the voltage divider rule to find branch currents, the power absorbed by each resistor is determined. The sum of power absorbed by all resistors must equal the total power supplied by the 60-V source, confirming the principle of conservation of energy.
