a

kinematic viscosity

5 marks

Answer

Kinematic viscosity, denoted by the Greek letter ν (nu), is defined as the ratio of dynamic viscosity (μ) to the density (ρ) of a fluid. It represents the momentum diffusivity of a fluid, indicating how easily a fluid flows under the influence of gravity or other forces.

ν = μ / ρ

The SI unit for kinematic viscosity is square meters per second (m²/s), and it is a measure of the resistance to flow of a fluid under gravity.

b

Newtonian fluids

5 marks

Answer

Newtonian fluids are fluids that obey Newton's law of viscosity, which states that the shear stress is directly proportional to the velocity gradient (rate of shear strain) perpendicular to the direction of flow. The constant of proportionality is the dynamic viscosity (μ).

τ = μ (du / dy)

For these fluids, the viscosity remains constant regardless of the rate of shear applied at a constant temperature and pressure. Common examples include water, air, and most simple gases and liquids.
