JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II Year MATERIALS THERMODYNAMICS Previous Question Paper (April/May - 2023 - R18)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
Define extensive and intensive properties.
Answer
Extensive properties depend on the mass or size of the system (e.g., volume, total energy). Intensive properties are independent of the mass or size of the system (e.g., temperature, pressure, density).
Show that heat is a path function and not a property.
Answer
A property is a point function whose change depends only on the end states, not the path taken. Heat transfer depends on the process path between two states; for example, the heat added to a gas during an isothermal expansion is different from that during an adiabatic expansion between the same two states. Since the integral of heat over a closed cycle is not zero, it cannot be a state function.

A reversible heat engine operates between two reservoirs at temperatures of 600°C and 400°C. The engine drives a reversible refrigerator which operates between reservoirs at temperatures of 400°C and -20°C. The heat transfer to the heat engine is 2000 kJ and the network output of the combined engine refrigerator plant is 360 kJ. a) Evaluate the heat transfer to the refrigerant and the net heat transfer to the reservoir at 400°C? b) reconsider (a) given that the efficiency of the heat engine and the cop of the refrigerator are each 40% of their maximum possible values?
