Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
List out various objectives and limitations of thermodynamics.
Answer
The primary objectives of thermodynamics include determining the feasibility of chemical reactions, predicting the equilibrium state of a system, calculating the energy changes associated with physical and chemical processes, and establishing the relationship between macroscopic properties like pressure, volume, and temperature. It also aims to define the limits of energy conversion efficiency in heat engines and power cycles.
The limitations of thermodynamics include: 1) It deals only with macroscopic systems and does not provide information about the behavior of individual atoms or molecules. 2) It is concerned only with the initial and final states of a system and provides no information regarding the rate of a process or the mechanism by which it occurs. 3) It assumes systems are in equilibrium, meaning it cannot describe systems undergoing rapid, non-equilibrium changes.
Explain the following terms: i) system and state, ii) heterogeneous and homogeneous systems.
Answer
i) A system is a defined portion of the universe under observation, separated from its surroundings by real or imaginary boundaries. The state of a system refers to its condition at a specific moment, defined by a set of macroscopic properties such as pressure, temperature, volume, and composition. If these properties are fixed, the state of the system is uniquely determined.
ii) A homogeneous system consists of a single phase where the physical and chemical properties are uniform throughout the entire volume. Examples include a pure gas or a perfectly mixed liquid solution. A heterogeneous system consists of two or more distinct phases separated by definite boundaries, where properties may differ between phases. An example is a mixture of ice and liquid water, where the solid and liquid phases coexist but maintain different physical characteristics.
Differentiate between Ideal gas and Real gas.
