B.Tech | II | II | R13 | December - 2018

Answer PaperPaper Code: 114AWMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

Part A

125 marks
a

What is fission? Explain with an example.

2 marks

Answer

Fission is a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of a heavy atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei, releasing a large amount of energy. A common example is the fission of Uranium-235, which splits into Barium and Krypton upon bombardment by a neutron.

b

Explain about the nuclear chain reaction.

3 marks

Answer

A nuclear chain reaction occurs when the neutrons released during the fission of one nucleus trigger the fission of other neighboring nuclei. This process becomes self-sustaining if at least one neutron from each fission event causes another fission, leading to a continuous release of energy.

c

Define thermal conductivity. Give its importance.
