Answer PaperPaper Code: 124AXMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Give any two applications of Fick’s laws?

2 marks

Answer

Two primary applications of Fick’s laws are the calculation of diffusion rates during homogenization of alloys and the determination of carburization or decarburization depths in surface hardening processes.

b

Define and explain Kirkendal effect?

3 marks

Answer

The Kirkendall effect is the observation that in a diffusion couple of two different metals, the interface between them shifts over time. This occurs because the two species diffuse at different rates (intrinsic diffusivities), leading to a net flux of vacancies toward the faster-diffusing species, which results in the formation of pores on the side of the faster-diffusing metal.

c

Define intrinsic diffusivity?

In Alcad, 20mm thick duralumin sheets are covered on either side with 0.2mm thick pure aluminum sheets. For retaining the corrosion resistance, the copper concentration at a depth of 0.1mm from the outer surface should not exceed 0.4%. How long can the material be kept at 550°C, without damaging the corrosion resistance? Given that D0 = 0.25 × 10⁻⁴ m² S⁻¹.
