Answer PaperPaper Code: 124AYMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Mention the various parameters influencing the choice of mineral processing methods.

2 marks

Answer

The choice of mineral processing methods is primarily influenced by the mineralogical composition, liberation size, physical and chemical properties of the mineral (e.g., density, surface chemistry, magnetic susceptibility), and economic factors such as market requirements and processing costs.

b

Calculate the number of increments required in the sampling of silica in iron ore for a desired overall precision of 0.1, if increment standard deviation is 1.5 and the preparation and assay standard deviation is 0.095.

3 marks

Answer

The number of increments n is calculated using the formula n = (s_i / s_p)^2, where s_i is the increment standard deviation and s_p is the required precision.

Given s_i = 1.5 and s_p = 0.1:

n = (1.5 / 0.1)^2 = 15^2 = 225

The preparation and assay variance is typically accounted for in the total variance, but based on the provided precision requirement, 225 increments are required.

c

What do you mean by ‘Reduction ratio’ with reference to crushing?

From a crushed quartz sample, the fraction less than 2 mm had to be removed by screening. The feed sample contained 35% of minus 2 mm material. After screening the oversize fraction contained 10% of minus 2 mm size and the undersize contained 82% of minus 2 mm size. Determine the efficiency of the screen.

Run of Mine granite is passed through a grizzly (42.5 cm) prior to crushing. The ore is to be broken down in a jaw crusher to pass through a 12.5 cm screen. The undersize is scalped before feeding to the jaw crusher. Assuming the maximum feed rate is maintained at 40 t/h and the shapes of feed and product are the same and the crusher set is 12cm, estimate the size of jaw crusher required and the production rate.
