JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II Year THERMODYNAMICS OF MATERIALS Previous Question Paper (February - 2024 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
Write a short note on Diffusion along grain boundaries.
Answer
Diffusion along grain boundaries occurs significantly faster than through the bulk crystal lattice because the disordered atomic arrangement at the boundary provides lower activation energy paths for atomic migration. This process is highly temperature-dependent and becomes dominant at lower homologous temperatures where lattice diffusion is negligible.
Define Self Diffusion and solid-state Diffusion.
Answer
Self-diffusion is the random movement of atoms within a pure material of the same species, often studied using radioactive tracers. Solid-state diffusion is the process of mass transport in solid materials via atomic motion, typically driven by concentration gradients, thermal activation, or defects like vacancies and interstitials.
