JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech III IRON MAKING Previous Question Paper (May/June - 2019 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.
Part A
What is the principle of iron making?
Answer
The principle of iron making is the reduction of iron oxides (ores) to metallic iron using a reducing agent, typically carbon monoxide (CO) or hydrogen (H2), at elevated temperatures in a furnace.
How are the iron ores classified?
Answer
Iron ores are primarily classified based on their chemical composition and mineralogical form:
- Oxide ores: Hematite (Fe2O3), Magnetite (Fe3O4).
- Hydrated oxide ores: Limonite (2Fe2O3·3H2O).
- Carbonate ores: Siderite (FeCO3).
- Sulphide ores: Iron pyrites (FeS2).
