Answer PaperPaper Code: 125BJMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

PART - A

125 marks
a

List down the major iron ore deposits in India.

2 marks

Answer

Major iron ore deposits in India are found in the Odisha-Jharkhand belt (hematite), the Durg-Bastar-Chandrapur region (Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra), the Bellary-Chitradurga-Chikkamagaluru-Tumakuru belt (Karnataka), and the Maharashtra-Goa belt.

b

Write the principles of sintering.

3 marks

Answer

Sintering involves the agglomeration of fine iron ore particles into a porous, coherent mass by partial fusion. The process relies on the combustion of solid fuel (coke breeze) within the bed, creating high temperatures that cause surface melting and bonding of ore particles, while the suction of air through the bed promotes uniform heat distribution and oxidation.

An iron blast furnace produces pig iron of the following composition: Fe - 93.6%, Si - 2.1%, C - 3.6%, and Mn - 0.7%. The ore used analyzes as follows: Fe2O3 - 78%, SiO2 - 9%, Al2O3 - 5%, MnO - 1% and H2O - 7%. Assume that all the Fe2O3 is reduced to Fe. The coke is 90% C and 10% SiO2 and 1 ton of coke is used per ton of pig iron made. The flux is pure CaCO3 and enough is used to make a slag of 45% CaO. Calculate:

  • a) The kilograms of ore used per ton of pig iron made.
  • b) The percentage of the total SiO2 and of the MnO reduced in the furnace.
  • c) The weight of slag made per ton of pig iron, and its percentage composition.
