Answer PaperPaper Code: 125BNMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define the terms smelting and roasting.

2 marks

Answer

Smelting is a pyrometallurgical process where ore is heated with a flux and fuel to produce a molten metal or matte, typically involving reduction. Roasting is the process of heating sulfide ores in the presence of excess air to convert them into oxides or sulfates, often to remove volatile impurities like sulfur as sulfur dioxide.

b

Explain in brief about electrolytic refining.

3 marks

Answer

Electrolytic refining is a purification technique where an impure metal acts as the anode and a pure metal strip acts as the cathode in an electrolytic cell containing a suitable electrolyte. Upon passing an electric current, the impure metal dissolves into the electrolyte, and pure metal ions deposit onto the cathode, leaving impurities as anode mud or in the solution.
