Why bulk material properties differ with nano material properties? Explain with the help of any realistic example.
Answer
Bulk materials exhibit properties governed by the collective behavior of atoms, whereas nanomaterials exhibit unique properties due to two primary factors: the Quantum Confinement Effect and the Surface-to-Volume Ratio. As particle size decreases to the nanometer scale, the electronic energy levels become discrete rather than continuous, significantly altering optical, electrical, and magnetic properties. Furthermore, a high percentage of atoms reside on the surface, leading to increased surface energy and chemical reactivity.
A realistic example is Gold (Au). In bulk form, gold is chemically inert, yellow in color, and a good conductor. However, when reduced to gold nanoparticles (typically 1–100 nm), the material changes color to red or purple due to Surface Plasmon Resonance, and it becomes highly reactive, serving as an efficient catalyst for chemical reactions.
Distinguish bottom up and top down approaches in Nanotechnology with examples.
Answer
The synthesis of nanomaterials is categorized into two main approaches:
- Top-Down Approach: This method involves breaking down bulk materials into smaller nanostructures through physical or mechanical processes. It is often analogous to sculpting. Examples include Ball Milling, Lithography, and Etching. While scalable, it often introduces structural defects and has limited control over the final atomic arrangement.
- Bottom-Up Approach: This method builds nanostructures atom-by-atom or molecule-by-molecule through chemical or biological synthesis. It mimics natural growth processes. Examples include Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), Sol-Gel synthesis, and Self-assembly. This approach offers superior control over size, shape, and purity, resulting in fewer defects compared to top-down methods.
