a

Draw flow sheet for pyrometallurgical extraction of Cu from copper sulphide ore.

8 marks

Answer

The pyrometallurgical extraction of copper from sulphide ores follows this sequence: 1. Concentration by froth flotation to produce copper concentrate. 2. Roasting of concentrate to remove excess sulphur. 3. Smelting in a reverberatory furnace or flash furnace to produce matte (Cu2S-FeS) and slag (Fe-silicates). 4. Converting of molten matte in a converter by blowing air to oxidize FeS to slag and convert Cu2S to blister copper. 5. Fire refining and electrolytic refining to achieve high purity copper.

b

Draw a neat sketch of Blast furnace? Describe the various parts in it.

7 marks

Answer

A blast furnace is a tall, vertical shaft furnace used for smelting. Its main parts include:

  1. Stack (Shaft): The upper conical section where the charge (ore, flux, coke) is preheated and undergoes initial reduction.
  2. Bosh: The middle section where the temperature is highest, and the charge begins to melt.
  3. Tuyeres: Nozzles located at the bottom of the bosh through which hot air or oxygen-enriched blast is injected to burn the coke.
  4. Hearth (Crucible): The bottom-most section where the molten metal and slag collect and are periodically tapped out through tap holes.
