JNTU B.Tech III NONFERROUS EXTRACTIVE METALLURGY Previous Question Paper (May - 2019 - R16)
Answer any five questions. Part A is compulsory (25 marks). Part B consists of 5 Units, answer any one full question from each unit (10 marks each).
Part A
Distinguish between smelting and converting.
Answer
Smelting is a pyrometallurgical process where ore is melted to produce a matte or metal phase along with slag. Converting is a subsequent oxidation process where air or oxygen is blown through the molten matte to remove impurities like iron and sulfur, typically producing blister metal.
Pressure leaching is beneficial. How?
Answer
Pressure leaching is beneficial because it allows for higher operating temperatures above the boiling point of the solvent, significantly increasing the reaction kinetics. It also enables the dissolution of refractory minerals that are insoluble at atmospheric pressure and improves the selectivity of leaching by controlling the partial pressure of gases like oxygen.
Name four common reagents used for leaching.
