What is the role of slag in steel making ?

Slag acts as a chemical solvent to remove impurities like phosphorus and sulfur from molten metal, protects the metal from atmospheric re-oxidation, and provides thermal insulation to minimize heat loss.
What is mean by synthetic slag? Explain different usages of synthetic slag.

Synthetic slag is a pre-melted or carefully blended mixture of fluxes (such as CaO, Al2O3, and CaF2) added to the ladle to achieve specific metallurgical objectives. Its usages include effective desulfurization, inclusion removal through absorption, and protection of the refractory lining from chemical attack.
