Differentiate TWIP and TRIP steels in detail.

7 marks

Answer

TWIP (Twinning-Induced Plasticity) and TRIP (Transformation-Induced Plasticity) steels are advanced high-strength steels that utilize distinct deformation mechanisms to achieve high ductility and strength.

TRIP steels rely on the martensitic transformation of retained austenite. During deformation, the metastable retained austenite transforms into martensite, which provides a significant increase in strain hardening rate, delaying necking and enhancing uniform elongation.

TWIP steels rely on mechanical twinning. These steels typically have a high manganese content (15-30%), which lowers the stacking fault energy. During plastic deformation, the formation of deformation twins acts as a dynamic grain refinement mechanism, effectively partitioning the austenite grains and maintaining a high work-hardening rate over a wider strain range.

Key differences include: 1) Mechanism: TRIP involves phase transformation (austenite to martensite), while TWIP involves crystallographic twinning. 2) Composition: TRIP steels generally have lower alloying elements compared to the high-Mn TWIP steels. 3) Ductility: TWIP steels typically exhibit superior total elongation compared to TRIP steels due to the continuous nature of the twinning process.

Write a short note on heat treatment of bainitic steels and its properties and applications.

8 marks

Answer

Bainitic steels are processed through austempering, a heat treatment designed to produce a microstructure consisting of fine bainitic ferrite plates interleaved with thin films of retained austenite.

The process involves: 1) Austenitizing the steel at a temperature above the A3 line. 2) Rapid quenching to a temperature range typically between 250°C and 450°C, which is above the Martensite Start (Ms) temperature but below the pearlite transformation range. 3) Holding the steel isothermally at this temperature until the austenite-to-bainite transformation is complete. 4) Cooling to room temperature.

Properties include an excellent combination of high tensile strength, good ductility, and superior toughness. The presence of retained austenite films provides crack-tip blunting, which enhances impact resistance and fatigue strength.

Applications include high-strength automotive components like chassis parts, suspension springs, and gears, as well as wear-resistant components in mining and construction machinery where high hardness and toughness are simultaneously required.
