JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech IV SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF CERAMICS Previous Question Paper (December - 2019 - R16)
Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
PART A
Define crystal and explain various types of crystals.
Answer
A crystal is a solid material where the constituent atoms, molecules, or ions are arranged in a highly ordered, repeating microscopic structure extending in all three spatial dimensions. Crystals are classified into seven crystal systems based on their unit cell geometry: Cubic, Tetragonal, Orthorhombic, Hexagonal, Rhombohedral, Monoclinic, and Triclinic.
List out the applications of ceramics.
Answer
Ceramics are used in diverse fields due to their high thermal and chemical stability, including: 1) Structural applications like bricks, tiles, and sanitary ware. 2) Refractories for high-temperature furnace linings. 3) Abrasives for grinding and cutting tools. 4) Electrical insulators and dielectric components. 5) Biomedical implants such as hip replacements and dental crowns.
