Explain the following:
Lorentz factor
Answer
The Lorentz factor is a geometric correction factor applied to X-ray diffraction intensity measurements to account for the fact that different crystal planes spend different amounts of time in the reflecting position during a diffraction experiment. It combines two distinct effects: the Lorentz effect, which relates to the angular velocity of the reciprocal lattice points passing through the Ewald sphere, and the polarization factor, which accounts for the reduction in intensity of X-rays scattered by electrons due to their polarization.
For a powder diffraction pattern, the Lorentz factor is expressed as:
This factor is essential because it corrects the observed integrated intensity to reflect the true structure factor of the crystal, ensuring that reflections at different diffraction angles (θ) are comparable.
Multiplication factor
Answer
The multiplication factor, also known as the multiplicity factor (p), represents the number of different crystallographic planes in a crystal system that have the same interplanar spacing (d-spacing) and thus contribute to the same diffraction peak.
Because crystals possess high degrees of symmetry, many planes are equivalent by symmetry operations (such as rotation or reflection). For example, in a cubic system, the planes (100), (010), (001), (-100), (0-10), and (00-1) are all crystallographically equivalent. Therefore, the multiplicity factor for the {100} family of planes in a cubic crystal is 6.
The multiplicity factor is a critical component in the intensity equation for powder diffraction, as the total intensity of a reflection is directly proportional to the number of planes contributing to that specific diffraction angle. As symmetry decreases (e.g., from cubic to triclinic), the multiplicity factor for a given set of indices generally decreases, as fewer planes remain equivalent.
