Discuss Bottom up approach for synthesis of Nanomaterials.

8 marks

Answer

The bottom-up approach involves the assembly of nanomaterials from smaller building blocks, such as atoms, molecules, or clusters, through chemical or physical processes. This method is analogous to building a structure brick by brick, allowing for precise control over the size, shape, and composition of the resulting nanostructures.

Key techniques include:

  • Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD): Gaseous precursors react or decompose on a substrate surface to form thin films or nanostructures.
  • Sol-Gel Processing: A chemical solution (sol) is converted into a gel network, which is then dried and sintered to produce nanoparticles or porous materials.
  • Self-Assembly: Molecules spontaneously organize into ordered structures through non-covalent interactions like hydrogen bonding or van der Waals forces.
  • Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE): Atoms are deposited onto a substrate in an ultra-high vacuum to grow high-quality crystalline layers.

The primary advantage of this approach is the ability to achieve high structural uniformity and reduced defects compared to top-down methods, as the material is constructed from the atomic level upwards.

b

Explain about filament winding and helical winding.

7 marks

Answer

Filament winding is a fabrication process for composite materials where continuous resin-impregnated fibers are wound onto a rotating mandrel. The fiber orientation is controlled by the relative motion of the mandrel rotation and the delivery head movement, allowing for high strength-to-weight ratios in structures like pressure vessels and pipes.

Helical winding is a specific configuration of filament winding where the fibers are laid down at a specific angle relative to the axis of the mandrel. In this process, the fiber delivery head moves back and forth along the length of the mandrel while it rotates, creating a crisscross pattern. This helical angle is critical for determining the mechanical properties of the component, specifically providing resistance to internal pressure and axial loads. By adjusting the winding angle, engineers can optimize the composite structure to handle hoop stresses and longitudinal stresses effectively.
