Draw a hyperbola having its two asymptotes inclined at 70° to each other and passing through a point P at a distance of 30 mm from one asymptote and 36 mm from the other. Draw a normal and a tangent at any convenient point.

15 marks

Answer

To construct the hyperbola, first draw the two asymptotes intersecting at an angle of 70°. Let the intersection point be O. Mark point P such that its perpendicular distance from the first asymptote (OA) is 30 mm and from the second asymptote (OB) is 36 mm. Construct a rectangle with sides 30 mm and 36 mm using the asymptotes as axes to locate P. To find additional points, draw lines through P intersecting the asymptotes. For any point Q on the curve, the area of the rectangle formed by its distances from the asymptotes must equal the area of the rectangle formed by P (30 × 36 = 1080 mm²). Plot several points by choosing arbitrary distances from one asymptote and calculating the corresponding distance from the other. Join these points with a smooth curve.

To draw the tangent and normal at a point M on the curve: Draw a line through M parallel to the asymptotes to intersect them at points S and T. Mark point R on the other asymptote such that OS = RT. The line joining R and M is the required tangent. The normal is the line drawn perpendicular to the tangent passing through point M.

Construct a diagonal scale of R.F. = 1 : 32,00,000 to show kilometers and long enough to measure up to 400 km. Show distances of 257 km and 333 km on your scale.

10 marks

Answer

The Representative Fraction (R.F.) is 1 : 3,200,000. The maximum length to be measured is 400 km. The Length of Scale (L.O.S.) is calculated as R.F. × Maximum Length: (1 / 3,200,000) × 400,000,000 cm = 12.5 cm.

  1. Draw a line 12.5 cm long and divide it into 4 equal parts, each representing 100 km.
  2. Subdivide the first part into 10 divisions, each representing 10 km.
  3. For the diagonal scale, draw 10 horizontal lines above the base line to create 10 rows.
  4. Divide the first main division vertically into 10 parts. Draw diagonal lines from the division points on the top line to the corresponding points on the base line to allow measurement of 1 km units.
  5. To mark 257 km: Locate 200 km on the main scale, 50 km on the sub-division, and move up 7 horizontal rows to the diagonal line to mark the exact point.
  6. To mark 333 km: Locate 300 km on the main scale, 30 km on the sub-division, and move up 3 horizontal rows to the diagonal line to mark the exact point.
