A circle of 60 mm diameter rolls along a straight line. Trace the path of a point on the periphery of the circle. Name the curve.

13 marks

Answer

The curve traced by a point on the periphery of a circle rolling along a straight line is called a Cycloid.

Construction Procedure:

  • Draw a circle of diameter 60 mm (radius R = 30 mm).
  • Draw a horizontal line representing the path of the circle, with length equal to the circumference of the circle, πD = 3.14 × 60 ≈ 188.5 mm.
  • Divide the circle into 12 equal parts and label them 1, 2, ..., 12.
  • Divide the straight line into 12 equal parts and label them 1', 2', ..., 12'.
  • Draw horizontal lines from the division points of the circle.
  • Draw vertical lines from the division points on the straight line to locate the centers of the circle at different positions (C1, C2, ..., C12).
  • With radius R = 30 mm and centers C1, C2, ..., C12, draw arcs to intersect the corresponding horizontal lines.
  • Join these intersection points with a smooth curve to obtain the Cycloid.

Construct a scale of 1/60 to read meters and decimeters and long enough to measure up to 6 meters. Mark on it a distance of 5.4 m.

12 marks

Answer

To construct a scale with Representative Fraction (R.F.) of 1/60 to measure up to 6 meters:

  • Calculate Length of Scale (L.O.S.):
  • L.O.S. = R.F. × Maximum Length = (1/60) × 600 cm = 10 cm
  • Draw a line 10 cm long and divide it into 6 equal parts, each representing 1 meter.
  • Divide the first part into 10 equal subdivisions, where each subdivision represents 1 decimeter (0.1 m).
  • Label the main divisions 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 meters and the subdivisions 0 to 10 decimeters.
  • To mark 5.4 m, place one end of the distance at the mark '4' on the meter scale and the other end at the '14' mark (4 meters + 14 decimeters = 5.4 meters) or simply measure 5 meters from the '0' mark and 4 decimeters from the '0' mark towards the left.

Draw the projections of the following points on a common reference line keeping the distance between their projectors 30 mm apart:

  • i) Point A is 20 mm below the H.P. and 50 mm in front of the V.P.
  • ii) Point B is in the H.P. and 40 mm behind the V.P.
  • iii) Point C is 30 mm in front of the V.P. and in the H.P.
  • iv) Point D is 50 mm above the H.P. and 30 mm behind the V.P.
  • v) Point E is 20 mm below the H.P. and 50 mm behind the V.P.
