If the pdf of a continuous random variable is given by f(x) = e-x, 0 ≤ x < ∞, find the mean and variance of the random variable.

7 marks

Answer

The given probability density function is f(x) = e-x for x ≥ 0. This is an exponential distribution with parameter λ = 1.

The mean (E[X]) is calculated as:

E[X] = ∫0∞ x e-x dx

Using integration by parts (∫ u dv = uv - ∫ v du) with u = x and dv = e-x dx:

E[X] = [-x e-x]0∞ + ∫0∞ e-x dx = 0 + [-e-x]0∞ = 1

To find the variance, first calculate E[X2]:

E[X2] = ∫0∞ x2 e-x dx = Γ(3) = 2! = 2

The variance (V[X]) is:

V[X] = E[X2] - (E[X])2 = 2 - 12 = 1

Answer

First, calculate the mean (x̄):

N = Σf = 2 + 3 + 5 + 4 + 1 = 15
x̄ = (Σfx) / N = (2(1) + 3(2) + 5(3) + 4(4) + 1(5)) / 15 = 45 / 15 = 3

The moments about the mean μr are given by Σf(x - x̄)r / N. Let d = (x - 3):

23-1-33-33
3500000
4414444
51224816
Total15--119-755

The first four moments are:

  • μ1 = Σfd / N = -1 / 15 ≈ -0.0667
  • μ2 = Σfd2 / N = 19 / 15 ≈ 1.2667
  • μ3 = Σfd3 / N = -7 / 15 ≈ -0.4667
  • μ4 = Σfd4 / N = 55 / 15 ≈ 3.6667
