What is Declination? What are different types of variations in Declination?

6 marks

Answer

Magnetic declination is the horizontal angle between the magnetic meridian and the true (geographic) meridian at any point on the Earth's surface. It indicates the deviation of the magnetic north pole from the true north pole.

The variations in magnetic declination are categorized as follows:

  • Secular variation: A slow, long-term change occurring over centuries, caused by the shifting of the Earth's internal magnetic field.
  • Diurnal variation: A daily oscillation of the magnetic needle, primarily influenced by the sun's position, reaching its maximum during the day and minimum at night.
  • Annual variation: A small yearly change in the declination value.
  • Irregular variation: Unpredictable and sudden changes caused by magnetic storms or local disturbances such as solar flares or proximity to magnetic ores.

The magnetic bearing of a line was found to be N 60° 30′ W in the year 1956, when the declination was 5° 10′ E. Find its present magnetic bearing if the declination is 3° W at present.

9 marks

Answer

First, determine the true bearing of the line using the data from 1956:

True Bearing = Magnetic Bearing - Declination (since East is positive)

Given Magnetic Bearing = N 60° 30′ W (which is 360° - 60° 30′ = 299° 30′ from North)

True Bearing = 299° 30′ - 5° 10′ = 294° 20′

Next, calculate the present magnetic bearing using the current declination of 3° W (which is treated as negative):

Present Magnetic Bearing = True Bearing - Declination
Present Magnetic Bearing = 294° 20′ - (-3° 00′) = 297° 20′

Converting back to quadrant bearing format:

360° 00′ - 297° 20′ = 62° 40′

The present magnetic bearing is N 62° 40′ W.
