JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II MINE MECHANISATION-I Previous Question Paper (December - 2018 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Main
What precautions are to be taken while transmitting compressed air in mines to increase its efficiency?
Answer
To increase efficiency, air leaks in pipe joints and valves must be eliminated through regular maintenance. Additionally, pipelines should be kept as straight as possible with minimal bends, and they must be adequately sized to prevent excessive pressure drops due to friction.
Name the different hydraulic fluids used with hydraulic power and compare them?
Answer
Common hydraulic fluids include water-based fluids (water-glycol, oil-in-water emulsions) and mineral oils. Mineral oils offer excellent lubrication and corrosion resistance but are flammable. Water-based fluids are fire-resistant and safer for underground use but have lower lubricity and may cause corrosion if not properly inhibited.

What is the maximum gradient on which a locomotive of 15 t mass can haul up a load of 100 t mass of train with an acceleration of 0.05 m/s2. If the coefficient of adhesion is 0.22 and the coefficient of running resistance is 0.015.if the train is to move at a maximum speed of 24 km/h up hill , what should be the HP of the engine. If brakes are applied when the same train when it is moving downhill at speed of 24 km/h at what distance the train will stop and what is the time required for the train to stop.
