Answer

An ecosystem is a fundamental unit of ecology consisting of a community of living organisms (biotic components) interacting in conjunction with the non-living (abiotic) components of their environment, such as air, water, and mineral soil, functioning as a system through nutrient cycles and energy flows.

The scope of an ecosystem encompasses the study of structural and functional relationships between organisms and their environment. It includes the analysis of biodiversity, population dynamics, habitat suitability, and the impact of anthropogenic activities on natural resources. It provides the framework for understanding environmental sustainability, resource management, and the restoration of degraded landscapes.

The functions of an ecosystem are primarily categorized into:

  • Energy flow: The unidirectional movement of energy through the trophic levels.
  • Nutrient cycling: The biogeochemical circulation of essential elements like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus between biotic and abiotic components.
  • Primary production: The synthesis of organic compounds from atmospheric or aqueous carbon dioxide by autotrophs.
  • Decomposition: The breakdown of organic matter by decomposers, returning nutrients to the soil.

The flow of energy in an ecosystem follows the laws of thermodynamics and is unidirectional. Solar energy is captured by producers (plants) via photosynthesis and converted into chemical energy. As energy moves from producers to primary consumers (herbivores), and subsequently to secondary and tertiary consumers (carnivores), a significant portion of energy is lost as heat at each trophic level, as described by the 10% Law of Energy Transfer. Consequently, energy availability decreases significantly at higher trophic levels, limiting the number of levels in a food chain.

Food Chains

5 marks

Answer

A food chain is a linear sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as one organism consumes another. It typically begins with a producer (autotroph), such as a plant, followed by primary consumers (herbivores), secondary consumers (carnivores), and tertiary consumers (top predators). Decomposers complete the chain by breaking down dead organic matter, recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem. Each step in the chain is referred to as a trophic level.
