Explain different rope guides commonly used in mine shaft with suitable diagrams.
Answer
Rope guides are essential components in mine shaft winding systems, providing stability and direction to conveyances (cages or skips) as they travel through the shaft. They prevent the conveyance from swaying or colliding with shaft walls or other equipment.
The primary types of rope guides include:
- Fixed Rope Guides: These are the most common type, consisting of heavy steel wire ropes suspended from the headframe and tensioned at the shaft bottom. The conveyance is equipped with guide shoes that slide along these ropes. They are typically arranged in a rectangular or circular pattern around the conveyance.
- Tensioned Rope Guides: These utilize a tensioning mechanism, such as dead weights or hydraulic rams, at the bottom of the shaft to maintain constant tension in the guide ropes. This ensures the ropes remain vertical and taut regardless of temperature fluctuations or shaft movement.
- Side-Mounted vs. Corner-Mounted Guides: Depending on the shaft layout and conveyance design, ropes may be positioned at the corners of the cage or along the sides. Corner-mounted guides provide better stability for rectangular cages, while side-mounted guides are often used in smaller shafts or for specific skip designs.
In a typical installation, the ropes are secured at the top by a suspension gear and at the bottom by a tensioning weight (cheese weights) housed in a sump. The weight must be sufficient to keep the ropes taut even under maximum wind load and dynamic forces. The guide shoes on the conveyance are lined with replaceable wear-resistant materials like nylon or specialized alloys to minimize friction and wear on both the shoe and the rope. Regular inspection of the rope diameter, tension levels, and shoe wear is critical for safety in high-speed winding operations.
Explain the king detaching safety hook used in cage winding, with suitable diagram.
Answer
The King Detaching Safety Hook is a critical safety device installed between the winding rope capel and the cage suspension gear. Its primary function is to prevent a cage from falling down the shaft in the event of an overwind, where the cage is pulled too high into the headgear.
The hook consists of two outer steel plates and two inner plates that pivot on a central pin. In normal operation, the plates are held together by a copper shearing pin, maintaining a locked position that connects the rope to the cage. The assembly passes through a detaching bell or cylinder fixed in the headframe.
The mechanism operates through the following sequence:
- During an overwind, the hook enters the detaching bell.
- The internal projections of the bell force the outer plates of the hook outward, shearing the copper pin.
- This movement causes the hook to release the winding rope and simultaneously locks the cage onto the top of the detaching bell using the hook's shoulders.
- The cage remains safely suspended in the headframe, preventing it from falling back into the shaft.
The device is designed to be fail-safe, ensuring that the cage is securely caught regardless of the load. Periodic inspection and testing of the shearing pin and the condition of the plates are mandatory to ensure reliability in emergency conditions.
