What are the factors to be considered for selection of site for box cut? Explain them in detail, with suitable examples.
Answer
A box cut is the initial excavation made in a surface mine to expose the coal or ore seam, creating the first working face and providing access for subsequent mining operations. The selection of the site for a box cut is critical as it dictates the efficiency of the entire mine life cycle.
The primary factors to be considered for the selection of a box cut site include:
- Geological Conditions: The site must be chosen where the overburden thickness is minimal to reduce initial stripping costs. The dip and strike of the seam are evaluated to ensure the box cut runs parallel to the strike, allowing for efficient face advancement.
- Topography and Drainage: The site should ideally be located on relatively flat or gently sloping terrain to avoid excessive earthmoving. Natural drainage patterns must be assessed to prevent flooding of the cut; the site should be at a higher elevation than the surrounding area or have adequate space for diversion channels.
- Proximity to Infrastructure: The box cut should be positioned near existing haul roads, power lines, and water sources to minimize initial capital expenditure on infrastructure development.
- Overburden and Mineral Quality: The site must be chosen where the overburden is stable and the mineral seam is of consistent quality and thickness. For example, selecting a site where the seam is faulted or split would lead to operational difficulties and poor recovery rates.
- Space for Waste Dump and Stockpiles: There must be sufficient land area adjacent to the box cut for the placement of initial overburden (external dump) and the storage of the extracted mineral.
- Environmental and Social Constraints: Proximity to residential areas, protected forests, or water bodies must be considered to comply with regulatory requirements regarding noise, dust, and vibration.
For example, in a flat-seam coal deposit, the box cut is typically placed at the outcrop or the shallowest part of the deposit to facilitate immediate access to the seam. Conversely, in a hilly terrain, the box cut is often placed along the contour of the hill to minimize the volume of overburden removed while ensuring stable highwall conditions.
Explain the status and scenario of surface mining in India, with suitable examples.
Answer
Surface mining is the dominant method of mineral extraction in India, accounting for over 90% of total mineral production. The sector is characterized by large-scale operations, particularly in coal, iron ore, limestone, and bauxite, driven by the country's reliance on thermal power and infrastructure development.
The current scenario is defined by the following key aspects:
- Coal Dominance: Coal mining, primarily through open-cast methods, constitutes the largest share of surface mining. Major coalfields like Talcher (Odisha), Korba (Chhattisgarh), and Singrauli (Madhya Pradesh) utilize massive draglines, electric rope shovels, and high-capacity dumpers to extract thick coal seams.
- Technological Advancement: There is a significant shift toward the deployment of high-capacity HEMM (Heavy Earth Moving Machinery). Modern mines are increasingly adopting Surface Miners, which eliminate the need for drilling and blasting, thereby improving safety, reducing environmental impact, and enhancing coal sizing.
- Scale and Productivity: Indian surface mines are among the largest in the world. The transition from manual or semi-mechanized methods to fully mechanized continuous mining systems has substantially increased output per man-shift (OMS).
- Environmental and Social Challenges: As surface mining involves large-scale land disturbance, the industry faces stringent regulatory oversight regarding environmental clearance, forest diversion, and rehabilitation. Sustainable mining practices, such as backfilling of voids and massive plantation drives, are now mandatory components of mining plans.
- Economic Significance: The sector is a primary contributor to the national GDP and energy security. For example, the iron ore mines in the Keonjhar district of Odisha utilize advanced beneficiation plants integrated with open-cast mining to supply high-grade ore to the steel industry.
In summary, the status of surface mining in India is one of rapid modernization and massive scale, balancing the high demand for mineral resources with increasing pressure for environmentally responsible and safe extraction techniques.
