JNTU B.Tech III NON-CONVENTIONAL ENERGY SOURCES Previous Question Paper (February/March - 2022 - R18)
Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Discuss energy requirement of rural consumers and state the possible alternative source of energy to meet the demand.
Answer
Energy consumption in rural areas is primarily driven by domestic needs, agricultural activities, and small-scale cottage industries. The primary requirements include:
- Domestic Energy: Cooking remains the largest energy consumer, traditionally relying on biomass such as firewood, cow dung, and agricultural residues. Lighting and basic electrical appliances like fans and televisions represent the secondary domestic load.
- Agricultural Energy: Irrigation is the most significant energy-intensive activity, requiring power for water pumping systems. Additionally, post-harvest processing such as milling, threshing, and drying requires mechanical or thermal energy.
- Cottage Industries: Small-scale rural enterprises, such as dairy processing, weaving, and pottery, require consistent energy for heating and motive power.
To meet these demands sustainably and reduce dependence on grid-based fossil fuels or traditional biomass, the following alternative energy sources are viable:
- Biomass Energy: Utilizing biogas plants (anaerobic digesters) converts animal waste and agricultural residues into clean-burning methane gas for cooking and lighting, while simultaneously producing high-quality organic fertilizer.
- Solar Energy: Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are ideal for decentralized electrification, providing power for lighting, mobile charging, and small appliances. Solar thermal systems, such as solar cookers and water heaters, can significantly reduce the demand for firewood.
- Wind Energy: Small-scale wind turbines or wind-pumps can be deployed in windy rural regions to assist in irrigation and mechanical power generation.
- Small Hydro Power: In regions with perennial streams or irrigation canals, micro-hydro power plants can provide reliable, continuous electricity for local communities and processing units.
Integrating these decentralized sources through hybrid systems ensures energy security, promotes rural economic development, and mitigates the environmental degradation caused by traditional fuel collection.
Write about Extraterrestrial Radiation and Terrestrial Radiation.
Answer
Extraterrestrial Radiation is the solar radiation received at the outer edge of the Earth's atmosphere. It is essentially constant, governed by the solar constant, which is approximately 1367 W/m². This radiation is not affected by the Earth's atmosphere, clouds, or pollutants. Its intensity varies slightly throughout the year due to the Earth's elliptical orbit around the sun, which causes the distance between the Earth and the sun to fluctuate.
Terrestrial Radiation is the solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface after passing through the atmosphere. As radiation travels through the atmosphere, it undergoes significant attenuation due to absorption and scattering by atmospheric constituents such as water vapor, ozone, carbon dioxide, dust, and aerosols. Consequently, the intensity of terrestrial radiation is significantly lower than extraterrestrial radiation and varies based on geographical location, time of day, season, and atmospheric conditions. It consists of two components: beam radiation (direct radiation reaching the surface without scattering) and diffuse radiation (radiation scattered by atmospheric particles).
