The Box cut is the initial excavation required to expose the coal seam or ore body in a surface mine, serving as the entry point for subsequent operations. Its site selection is critical for the following reasons:

• Geological Suitability: The site must be chosen where the overburden thickness is minimal and the seam is at a shallow depth to reduce initial stripping costs and time.
• Operational Efficiency: Proper placement ensures optimal haul road gradients and provides sufficient space for the initial placement of overburden (dumping) and the setup of primary mining machinery.
• Drainage and Stability: The site must be located in an area with stable ground conditions to prevent slope failures and at a topography that facilitates natural drainage to minimize water accumulation in the pit.
• Logistical Access: It must be positioned to allow easy access for heavy earth-moving machinery (HEMM) and provide a clear path for the transport of extracted minerals to the surface facilities or processing plants.
• Economic Viability: A well-placed box cut minimizes the 'dead work' or non-productive excavation, directly impacting the project's internal rate of return and initial capital expenditure.

Surface mining is the dominant method for mineral extraction in India, accounting for over 90% of the total coal production and a significant portion of iron ore, bauxite, and limestone. The current status is characterized by the following trends:

• Mechanization and Scale: There is a massive shift toward large-scale open-cast operations utilizing high-capacity equipment such as draglines, electric rope shovels, and large-capacity dumpers to handle increasing stripping ratios.
• Technological Adoption: Integration of advanced technologies like GPS-based fleet management systems, automated drilling rigs, and sophisticated mine planning software is becoming standard to improve productivity and safety.
• Environmental and Social Focus: Due to stringent regulatory frameworks, there is an increased emphasis on progressive mine closure, land reclamation, and sustainable mining practices to mitigate the environmental footprint.
• Policy Environment: Government initiatives such as the auctioning of coal blocks and the promotion of commercial coal mining have encouraged private sector participation alongside public sector giants like Coal India Limited (CIL).
• Challenges: Despite its dominance, the sector faces challenges regarding land acquisition, rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) of displaced populations, and the need to transition toward greener mining practices to meet climate commitments.
