1

Explain the factors affecting choice of mining methods with figures if necessary.

15 marks

Answer

The selection of an appropriate mining method in underground coal mining is a critical decision that dictates the safety, productivity, and economic viability of the operation. The primary factors influencing this choice include:

1. Geological Conditions: The thickness of the coal seam is a primary determinant; thin seams are often extracted using longwall or continuous miner methods, while thick seams may require multi-slice or sublevel caving. The dip of the seam significantly affects equipment mobility and gravity-assisted transport; flat seams favor longwall mining, whereas steep seams may require specialized methods like breast stoping or hydraulic mining. Furthermore, the presence of geological disturbances such as faults, folds, or igneous intrusions can render highly mechanized systems like longwall mining unfeasible.

2. Geotechnical Properties: The strength and stability of the coal seam, roof, and floor strata are essential. Weak roof conditions necessitate intensive support systems or methods that allow for rapid advance, such as longwall mining with powered supports. Conversely, strong roof conditions might permit room and pillar mining with minimal support.

3. Depth of Cover: As depth increases, the vertical stress (overburden pressure) rises, leading to potential issues like coal bumps, floor heave, and gas outbursts. At greater depths, methods that minimize the exposure of personnel and allow for high-capacity, automated extraction are preferred over labor-intensive methods.

4. Gas and Water Conditions: The presence of methane or high groundwater inflow influences the choice of ventilation and drainage infrastructure. Gassy seams require methods that facilitate efficient methane drainage, while water-bearing strata may necessitate methods that minimize surface subsidence or require extensive dewatering.

5. Economic and Technological Factors: Capital availability, labor costs, and the level of mechanization determine the method. High-output mechanized longwall systems require significant initial investment but offer low operating costs per tonne, whereas room and pillar mining offers flexibility with lower initial capital but higher labor requirements.

6. Environmental and Regulatory Constraints: Surface subsidence limitations, conservation of coal, and strict safety regulations regarding ventilation and dust control often dictate the selection. For example, in areas where surface structures must be protected, stowing or backfilling methods are chosen to mitigate subsidence.

Explain the status of coal industry under Indian coal mining conditions.

15 marks

Answer

The Indian coal industry serves as the backbone of the country's energy sector, with coal accounting for over 50% of the primary commercial energy supply. The industry is characterized by a massive resource base, with total geological reserves exceeding 360 billion tonnes, primarily located in the Gondwana and Tertiary coalfields.

The current status of the industry is defined by the following key aspects:

  • Dominance of Public Sector: Coal India Limited (CIL) remains the largest coal producer globally, contributing the majority of domestic production, supplemented by Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL).
  • Shift in Mining Methods: There is a significant transition from underground mining to opencast mining, which currently accounts for over 90% of total production due to economic viability, higher recovery rates, and the ability to exploit thick, shallow seams.
  • Energy Security Challenges: Despite the push for renewable energy, coal demand continues to rise to meet the requirements of the power sector, steel, and cement industries. The industry faces the dual challenge of increasing production to reduce import dependency while adhering to stringent environmental and safety regulations.
  • Technological Modernization: Efforts are underway to introduce mass production technologies, such as Continuous Miners and Powered Support Longwalls in underground mines, to improve productivity and safety, though adoption remains limited compared to opencast operations.
  • Policy Reforms: Recent policy shifts, including the introduction of commercial coal mining for the private sector and the implementation of the Single Window Clearance system, aim to attract investment, enhance competition, and streamline project approvals.
  • Sustainability and Just Transition: The industry is increasingly focused on sustainable mining practices, including land reclamation, coal gasification, and the development of coal-to-chemical projects to align with national net-zero targets.

In summary, while the Indian coal industry remains vital for economic growth, it is currently navigating a complex landscape of increasing demand, environmental pressure, and the need for technological transformation to ensure long-term viability.
