Describe the constraints on Ground Control and design.
Answer
Ground control design in mining is governed by a complex set of constraints that dictate the stability and safety of underground excavations. These constraints are categorized into three primary domains:
- Geological Constraints: These include the depth of cover, which determines the magnitude of the in-situ stress field, the presence of geological discontinuities such as faults, joints, and bedding planes, and the inherent strength and deformation characteristics of the host rock mass.
- Geotechnical and Mechanical Constraints: The design must account for the stress-strain behavior of the rock, the potential for time-dependent deformation (creep), and the risk of sudden energy release, such as rock bursts or coal bumps, which are influenced by the stiffness of the rock mass.
- Operational and Economic Constraints: These involve the mining method employed, the required dimensions of the excavation, the ventilation requirements, and the necessity to balance the cost of support systems against the production rate and the overall safety factor required to prevent structural failure.
Explain the characteristic properties of coal measure strata.
Answer
Coal measure strata consist of a sequence of sedimentary rocks, primarily coal seams interbedded with shales, siltstones, and sandstones. Their characteristic properties significantly influence mining stability:
- Heterogeneity and Anisotropy: Unlike massive igneous rocks, coal measures are highly stratified. Their mechanical properties vary significantly both vertically (between different lithological units) and horizontally, often exhibiting anisotropic behavior due to bedding planes and cleat systems.
- Low Compressive Strength: Coal and associated shales generally possess relatively low compressive strength compared to competent rocks. This makes them prone to floor heave, roof sagging, and pillar spalling under high vertical stresses.
- Time-Dependent Behavior: Many coal measure rocks, particularly argillaceous (clay-rich) shales, exhibit significant creep or time-dependent deformation. This leads to the gradual closure of roadways and the progressive degradation of support systems over time.
- Influence of Moisture: The presence of water often leads to the degradation of shales and mudstones through swelling or softening, which drastically reduces their shear strength and cohesion, increasing the risk of roof falls.
- Cleat and Joint Systems: Coal seams are characterized by natural fracture networks known as cleats. These influence the permeability of the seam and its structural integrity, often acting as planes of weakness that dictate the failure mode of pillars and ribs.
