Discuss about the ground control problems and monitoring systems during drivage of a tunnel to negotiate a 20m fault in a coal seam of 3m thickness.

15 marks

Answer

When driving a tunnel through a 20m wide fault zone in a 3m thick coal seam, the primary ground control challenge is the loss of rock mass integrity due to intense fracturing, shearing, and potential water inflow. The fault zone acts as a zone of weakness where the rock mass rating (RMR) is significantly reduced, leading to high convergence, roof falls, and side squeezing.

Ground Control Problems:

  1. Instability of Roof and Sides: The fractured nature of the fault material leads to immediate roof instability upon excavation. The 3m seam thickness increases the span of the tunnel, exacerbating the risk of roof collapse.
  2. Squeezing Ground Conditions: High lithostatic pressure combined with the soft, crushed material in the fault zone can cause significant inward movement of the tunnel walls, potentially damaging support systems.
  3. Water Inflow: Faults often act as conduits for groundwater, which reduces the effective stress of the rock mass and washes out fine material, leading to piping or mud rushes.
  4. Support Failure: Standard support patterns may be insufficient, leading to buckling of steel arches or failure of rock bolts due to excessive load redistribution.

Monitoring Systems:

  1. Convergence Monitoring: Use tape extensometers or laser distance meters to measure the rate of closure between roof and floor and between sidewalls. An accelerating rate of convergence is a critical warning sign of impending failure.
  2. Multi-Point Borehole Extensometers (MPBX): Installed into the roof and sidewalls to monitor deep-seated rock mass movement and identify the depth of the plastic zone.
  3. Load Cells: Installed on rock bolts and steel arches to monitor the actual load being carried by the support elements, ensuring they do not exceed their yield capacity.
  4. Piezometers: Used to monitor pore water pressure within the fault zone to predict potential water-related instability.
  5. Micro-seismic Monitoring: Useful for detecting rock mass fracturing and stress redistribution within the fault zone in real-time.

Mitigation Strategy: To negotiate the fault, immediate support installation (e.g., spiling or forepoling) is essential to create a protective canopy. The tunnel should be driven in short, controlled rounds with systematic installation of heavy-duty support, such as yielding steel arches combined with shotcrete and wire mesh to contain the fractured rock mass.

2

Explain about the characteristics of coal measure strata of Indian coal fields.

15 marks

Answer

The coal measure strata in Indian coalfields are primarily associated with the Gondwana Supergroup, characterized by specific lithological, structural, and mechanical properties that significantly influence mining operations. The key characteristics are as follows:

1. Lithological Composition: The strata consist of a cyclic sequence of sandstones, shales, carbonaceous shales, and coal seams. Sandstones are often massive, cross-bedded, and vary from fine-grained to coarse-grained. Shales are frequently laminated and prone to weathering when exposed to moisture.

2. Mechanical Properties: Indian coal measure rocks generally exhibit moderate to high compressive strength. Sandstones often act as competent, strong roof layers, while shales and mudstones are weaker and more susceptible to bed separation and roof falls. The presence of clay minerals in the shales can lead to floor heave and swelling under saturated conditions.

3. Structural Features: The strata are often affected by tectonic disturbances such as faults, folds, and igneous intrusions. Dolerite dykes and sills are common, which not only displace coal seams but also metamorphose the surrounding coal into 'jhama' (natural coke), altering the local rock mass strength.

4. Bedding and Jointing: The strata are well-bedded with distinct planes of weakness. Joint sets are prevalent, which dictate the block size and caving characteristics of the roof strata during pillar extraction. The interaction between these planes and the induced stress field is a primary factor in strata control.

5. Groundwater Conditions: Many Indian coalfields are characterized by high permeability in the sandstone aquifers. This leads to significant water inflow issues in underground workings, which can degrade the strength of the immediate roof and floor strata over time.

6. In-situ Stress Regime: The stress state is generally dominated by vertical overburden pressure, but horizontal stress components are significant due to past tectonic activity. These horizontal stresses often contribute to roof instability in longwall faces and development galleries.
