Main
List the types of accidents. Write notes on them.
Answer
Mine accidents are generally classified based on their severity and the nature of the occurrence to facilitate reporting and safety analysis. The primary types include:
- Fatal Accidents: Accidents resulting in the loss of human life. These are subject to mandatory government inquiry and strict investigation protocols.
- Serious Reportable Accidents: Accidents involving permanent loss or injury to any limb, or an injury that results in the detention of the person in a hospital for more than 72 hours.
- Minor/Reportable Accidents: Injuries that do not result in permanent disability but prevent the worker from resuming their duties for a period exceeding 48 hours.
- Dangerous Occurrences: Incidents that do not necessarily cause injury but have the potential to cause harm, such as spontaneous heating, outbursts of gas, premature collapse of workings, or fires. These must be reported to the regulatory authorities.
Explain the statistical analysis of mine accidents.
Answer
Statistical analysis of mine accidents is essential for identifying trends, evaluating safety performance, and implementing preventive measures. The analysis typically utilizes the following key metrics:
- Frequency Rate (FR): This measures the number of accidents occurring per million man-hours worked. It is calculated as:FR = (Number of Accidents × 1,000,000) / Total Man-hours Worked
- Severity Rate (SR): This reflects the gravity of accidents by measuring the number of days lost due to injuries per million man-hours worked. It is calculated as:SR = (Total Days Lost × 1,000,000) / Total Man-hours Worked
- Incidence Rate: This represents the number of accidents per 1,000 persons employed, providing a demographic perspective on risk.
- Trend Analysis: By plotting these rates over time, management can identify whether safety interventions are effective or if specific operational areas are becoming more hazardous.
These statistics allow safety engineers to perform Pareto analysis to prioritize high-risk areas and conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
