Answer PaperPaper Code: 111ADMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Deduce the spacing between (223) planes in a cubic crystal of lattice constant 0.15 nm.

2 marks

Answer

For a cubic crystal, the interplanar spacing d is given by the formula:

d = a / √(h2 + k2 + l2)

Given a = 0.15 nm and (hkl) = (223), we have:

d = 0.15 / √(22 + 22 + 32) = 0.15 / √17 ≈ 0.0364 nm
b

Find the packing factor of BCC lattice.

3 marks

Answer

The atomic packing factor (APF) is the ratio of the volume of atoms in a unit cell to the total volume of the unit cell. For a BCC structure, there are 2 atoms per unit cell and the relation between lattice constant 'a' and atomic radius 'r' is 4r = a√3.

APF = (2 × (4/3)πr3) / a3 = (8/3)π(a / (4/√3))3 / a3 = (8/3)π(3√3 / 64) = √3π / 8 ≈ 0.68
