Answer PaperPaper Code: 115EEMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

125 marks
a

Describe the basic elements of machining.

2 marks

Answer

The basic elements of machining are the workpiece, which is the raw material; the cutting tool, which removes material in the form of chips; and the machine tool, which provides the relative motion and power required for the cutting action.

b

How does a build up edge is formed? Explain its effects.

3 marks

Answer

A Built-Up Edge (BUE) forms when work material welds to the tool rake face due to high pressure and temperature at the tool-chip interface. Its effects include increased cutting forces, degraded surface finish, and accelerated tool wear as the BUE periodically breaks off and carries away tool material.
