B.Tech | III | III-I | R15 | May/June - 2019

Answer PaperPaper Code: 125DFMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Compare and contrast Preignition and knocking.

2 marks

Answer

Preignition is the ignition of the charge before the timed spark occurs, caused by hot spots in the combustion chamber. Knocking is the spontaneous, rapid combustion of the end gas due to high pressure and temperature after the spark has occurred. While preignition is a surface-initiated phenomenon, knocking is a gas-phase auto-ignition phenomenon.

b

Explain the significance of turbulence in IC engines.

3 marks

Answer

Turbulence is essential in IC engines to increase the flame propagation speed and ensure complete combustion. It promotes better mixing of fuel and air, reduces the combustion duration, and helps in breaking down the boundary layers on the cylinder walls, thereby improving thermal efficiency and power output.

c

What are the techniques available for the measurement of frictional power?
