JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech I Year PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY Previous Question Paper (September - 2023 - R22)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part-A for 10 marks, Part-B for 50 marks. Part-A is a compulsory question consisting of ten sub-questions. Part-B consists of ten questions (numbered from 2 to 11) carrying 10 marks each. From each unit, there are two questions and the student should answer one of them. The student should answer five questions from Part-B.
Part A
Discuss the common bonding patterns in organic compounds with examples.
Answer
Organic compounds primarily exhibit covalent bonding through electron sharing. Carbon typically forms four bonds (tetravalency) via sp3, sp2, or sp hybridization. Examples include methane (CH4) with single bonds, ethene (C2H4) with a double bond, and ethyne (C2H2) with a triple bond.
Discuss the polarity of bonds.
Answer
Bond polarity arises from the difference in electronegativity between bonded atoms. When electrons are shared unequally, the more electronegative atom acquires a partial negative charge (δ-), and the less electronegative atom acquires a partial positive charge (δ+), creating a dipole moment.
