JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II FLUID MECHANICS AND MECHANICAL UNIT OPERATIONS Previous Question Paper (February - 2024 - R22)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part- A for 10 marks, Part- B for 50 marks. Part-A is a compulsory question. Part-B consists of ten questions (numbered from 2 to 11) carrying 10 marks each. From each unit, there are two questions and the student should answer one of them. Hence, the student should answer five questions from Part-B.
Part A
Part-A consists of ten sub-questions carrying equal marks.
Define Newtonian and Non-Newtonian Fluids.
Answer
A Newtonian fluid is one whose viscosity remains constant regardless of the shear rate applied. A Non-Newtonian fluid is one whose viscosity changes as the applied shear rate or stress varies.
Explain the term hydrostatic equilibrium.
Answer
Hydrostatic equilibrium occurs when a fluid is at rest and the pressure gradient force is exactly balanced by the gravitational force, resulting in no net fluid motion.

Part B
Distinguish between i) standard and local atmospheric pressures ii) barometric pressure and absolute pressure and iii) absolute pressure and gauge pressure.
The water is flowing through a pipe having diameters 20 cm and 15 cm at sections 1 and 2 respectively. The rate of flow through pipe is 40 L/s. The section 1 is 9 m above datum line and section 2 is 5 m above the datum. If the pressure at section 1 is 32.40 N/cm2, Evaluate intensity of pressure at section 2.

Air at 20°C and 1 atmosphere flows at 2 m/s past a sharp flat plate. Assuming that the Karman parabolic-profile analysis, is accurate, estimate a) the local velocity u and b) the local shear stress τ at the position (x, y) = (50 cm, 5 mm). For air, take density = 1.2 kg/m3 and dynamic viscosity = 1.8 x 10-5 kg/ms.
