Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. i) Part- A for 10 marks, ii) Part - B for 50 marks. Part-A is a compulsory question which consists of ten sub-questions from all units carrying equal marks. Part-B consists of ten questions (numbered from 2 to 11) carrying 10 marks each. From each unit, there are two questions and the student should answer one of them. Hence, the student should answer five questions from Part-B.

Part A

110 marks
a

Explain Sorensen’s pH scale.

1 marks

Answer

Sorensen’s pH scale is a logarithmic scale ranging from 0 to 14 used to specify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. It is defined as the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration, providing a convenient way to express the wide range of H+ concentrations found in chemical and biological systems.

b

Write the equation for measurements of pH and write its importance.

1 marks

Answer

The equation for pH is pH = -log[H+]. Its importance lies in determining the stability, solubility, and physiological compatibility of pharmaceutical formulations, as many drugs are weak acids or bases whose activity depends on the ionization state dictated by the pH of the medium.
